Jesus was born in the year 4 BCE. He began preaching around the year 27–29 CE. Though he was a Jewish teacher, his teachings were quite different from the accepted teachings of the time.

  • Christians worship Jesus as the Jewish messiah and incarnation of God.
    • He is one of the most famous, most recognised, and most influential people in history.
  • People often saw Jesus as dangerous and strange, but this did not stop him.
    • Many people didn't believe Jesus at first despite reports of his miracles, such as walking on water or feeding the 5000.
    • “Even his own brothers did not believe in him” [John 7:5]

Jesus and the Roman authorities

  • Jesus spread his message and performing miracles publicly, which threatened religious & Roman authorities.
    • The Romans ruling the area saw him as a threat.
    • The Jewish authorities were frustrated by Jesus and believe that he undermined their religion with his new messages.
    • Chapter 3 in the Book of Mark gives lots of examples of Jesus' struggles.
