Holocaust Memorials

There are a number of Holocaust memorial days in the year.

Holocaust memorials

Holocaust memorials

  • The Jewish community commemorates the Holocaust on the 27th of Nissan which coincides with the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
    • The Israeli Parliament chose this day to reflect not only the tragedy of the death of six million Jews but also the bravery of the Jews to stand and fight back.
  • Jews stand for two minutes of silence and reflect on what happened.
Memorials in the UK

Memorials in the UK

  • There is a national Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) in the UK on the 27th of January.
  • HMD marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
  • Thousands of people come together each to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future.
  • HMD is not only to remember the Holocaust, but also the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in other genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

  • The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is a charity established and funded by the UK Government to promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) in the UK.
  • HMD has taken place in the UK since 2001, with a UK Commemorative Ceremony and more than 10,000 local activities taking place all across the UK on or around the 27th of January each year.
  • Other UK charities take students to Poland and visit the Nazi concentration and death camps.
Antisemitism today

Antisemitism today

  • Antisemitism still exists in the world today.
  • Even in countries with no Jewish communities there is Jew-hatred.
  • This shows that there is no logic or reason to it.
  • In the UK a charity called Community Security Trust (CST) exists to facilitate Jewish life by protecting Jews from the dangers of antisemitism.
Antisemitism today (cont.)

Antisemitism today (cont.)

  • Sometimes antisemitism is disguised as anti-Israel behaviour.
  • Many people understand that hatred of the Jewish country is an excuse to hate Jews.
    • This does not mean that one cannot criticise Israel and its policies.
  • However, irrational hatred of everything connected with Israel is often just a cover for a hatred of Jews.
