Moses and The Exodus

The Exodus is when God freed the Jewish people from their enslavement in Egypt.

The plagues

  • Moses is the leader of the Israelites/Jewish people.
    • God tells Moses to instruct the Pharaoh (the King of Egypt) to let the Jews go free to worship God.
  • The King of Egypt refuses and is punished by God with 10 plagues.
    • These plagues are of blood; frogs; lice; wild animals; deaths of animals; boils; hail; locusts; darkness; and the deaths of firstborn children.

  • The death of every firstborn child was a punishment for hurting “God’s firstborn” (the Jewish people).
    • The day after this tenth plague, the Israelites walk to freedom.
Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai

  • Seven weeks later, the Jewish people are standing at Mount Sinai ready to receive the Torah and the laws from God.
    • The Ten Commandments/ Ten Sayings {this is more accurate} are spoken to all the people.
    • Moses then spends 40 days and nights on Mount Sinai learning the other laws and the details.

The Ten Commandments

  • Ultimately, the Jewish people are given 613 Mitzvot/Commandments.
  • The first ten laws are:
    • Belief in the One God
    • Not to Worship other gods
    • Not to take God’s name in vain
    • Keep the Sabbath
    • Honour your parents
    • Do not kill
    • Do not commit adultery
    • Do not steal
    • Do not lie when giving evidence in court
    • Do not be jealous.
