The Sanctity of Life

How to protect and care for life is probably the most basic moral question. Two related but different terms are often used when discussing this. The Sanctity of Life and the Quality of Life.

Sanctity

Sanctity

  • Sanctity of life is a religious term.
    • The word sanctity can be translated as ‘holiness’.
  • Religious people believe that the idea of holiness comes from God.
    • God is holy, meaning God is perfect and worthy of total devotion.
    • Anything that relates to God can also be considered holy.
Life is holy

Life is holy

  • Life is considered holy by religious people because it is God who gives life.
    • In fact, they would say that life is one of God’s greatest gifts.
  • This does not just mean human life, because they believe that God also gave life to the plants and animals.
    • But for the moment we can focus on human life.
  • In the Book of Genesis God says: "Let us make humankind in our own image".
    • This suggests that human life is especially important.

The sanctity of life

  • One belief of many religious people is that God gives, and only God can take away.
    • This can mean that life is holy and belongs to God. From the moment a new life is conceived until it comes to its natural end!
    • No one has the right to end that life before its time.
  • For some believers, this even means that they are opposed to Capital Punishment and to killing in war. Although not everyone agrees with that.
