The Nature of the Trimurti

Trimurti

Trimurti

  • The Trimurti means “three forms” in Sanskrit.
  • The Trimurti shows how the one divine reality, Brahman, works in three main ways.
    • These three forms are the gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
    • Each god has an important role in how the universe changes and continues.
  • Together, the three gods symbolise the cycle of life:
    • Creation, preservation, and destruction.
Brahma, The Creator

Brahma, The Creator

  • Brahma creates the universe and everything in it.
    • He is often shown with four faces, looking in all directions to see all things.
  • Brahma's work begins the cycle of life.
    • He represents knowledge and wisdom.
  • Few temples are dedicated to Brahma, as his role of creation is already complete.
Vishnu, The Preserver

Vishnu, The Preserver

  • Vishnu’s job is to keep the universe safe and balanced.
    • He is loving and kind. He helps people when there is trouble.
    • He symbolises peace, protection, and goodness.
  • Vishnu has come to Earth in different avatars (forms).
    • For example, Rama and Krishna.
  • Many Hindus pray to Vishnu or his avatars to guide them in life.
Shiva, The Destroyer

Shiva, The Destroyer

  • Shiva’s role is to destroy the universe when the time is right, so it can begin again.
  • This destruction is not bad. Ot is part of renewal and change.
  • Shiva is often shown in deep meditation or dancing the Tandava.
    • Tandava is the dance of creation and destruction.
    • He represents power, transformation, and new beginnings.
  • Many Hindus worship Shiva as a symbol of life’s constant cycle.
