  • Joseph Fletcher (1905 – 1991) was an American academic.
    • He was, for a time, a Christian priest.
    • Though later he declared himself to be an atheist and a humanist.

  • One of the objections to the Natural Law theory was that it was inflexible.
    • It sought to apply a single rule regardless of the circumstances.
  • Fletcher developed a moral theory during the 1960s which he called Situation Ethics.
    • Situation Ethics is an attempt to look at ethical decisions in a way that depends upon the situation in which they are made.

    • In the 1960s, especially in Europe and the United States, there was a demand for a less restrictive morality.
    • And a morality that took account of the times.
