The poor and powerless

  • The current Pope Francis asked for people to live and support each other as brothers and sisters.
    • Many Christians believe the Church should encourage caring for suffering people around the world.
  • In the Catholic Church last century there was a movement called Liberation Theology.
    • Liberation Theology teaches that Christians should follow the example of Jesus. Jesus said the most important thing is to help those who are poor and cannot help themselves.

The role of women

  • One problem for the Christian Church is no women were in leadership for almost its entire history.
    • This has been changing. In the Church of England, for example, there are now female priests and bishops.
  • But this is not true of all Christian Churches.
    • The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church still don't allow women to be priests or lead worship.

  • Science teaches us that the Universe came into existence billions of years ago, and human beings evolved relatively recently.
    • But, some Christians believe God created humans and the world from the Creation Story in the Bible.
  • This conflict can put some Christians at odds with the modern world.
