Christianity Today

Christianity today contains many different groups of Christians, often these groups are called denominations.

The Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Church

  • We have seen that there have two great splits in the Church.
  • The first split happened in the 11th Century. This was the Great Schism of the churches of the East and West.
    • The Church in the East is usually called the Orthodox Church.
    • The Orthodox Church includes Christians in such countries as Greece and Russia.
Protestantism

Protestantism

  • The second split in the Church was in the 16th Century.
  • This split was the Reformation, which divided Catholics and Protestants.
  • Both Catholics and Protestants are found all over the world.
    • Protestants within the Church are not part of a single group. They are divided into lots of smaller groups, each believing slightly different things.
    • These groups include Lutherans, Methodists and Baptists, among many others.
Decline in Christianity

Decline in Christianity

  • There are almost 2.5 billion Christians in the world. This is almost a third of the global population!
    • This figure may be misleading because it does not say how many Christians are active members of the Church.
    • Many Christians never worship in a church. Some people are only called Christians because they were baptised as children.
  • There is no doubt that Christianity has been in decline over the last hundred years.
Reasons for decline in Christianity

Reasons for decline in Christianity

  • There are two key reasons for the decline in Christianity:
    • The modern world often seems to have little time for religion. Many shops open on Sundays. Public figures rarely talk about religion. People can seem more interested in improving their standard of living. This is known as secularisation.
    • The Church is also losing touch with the modern world. Some people, especially young people, are no longer attracted to the message of the traditional Churches or find Christian worship boring.
