The UK film industry is regulated by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification).

- All films must be certified before they are released to ensure the audience are protected from any unsuitable themes.
- The BBFC categories film in U, PG, 12, 12A, 15 and 18 certificates.
12A certification
12A certification
- A 12A means children under the age of 12 can watch the film as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
- This certification is for cinema release only.
- The film will be certificated as a 12 when it goes onto DVD and other platforms and it is not possible to ensure a child under 12 would watch the product with an adult.

- The key areas that are considered for certification are:
- Discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence.
Audience reach
Audience reach
- When making a film the producers will need to bear in mind what certification the film would get in order to target their audience.
- A 12A/12 film ensures a large audience reach, whereas a 15 and 18 limit the potential target audience and so limit the overall profit that can be made.
