Impact of Agriculture

Agriculture can reduce biodiversity in a number of ways. These include:

Deforestation

Deforestation

  • Large regions of forests are cleared to provide space for crop or livestock farms.
  • Forests are biodiverse environments because there are many different habitats for different species.
  • Removal of forests decreases biodiversity for two reasons:
    • The direct removal of species (e.g. trees).
    • The removal of habitats causing species to die.
Pesticides

Pesticides

  • Pesticides are sprayed onto crops to prevent pests (e.g. slugs) from feeding on crops.
  • Pesticides reduce biodiversity for two reasons:
    • The direct removal of pests.
    • The species that feed on the pests cannot survive.
Herbicides

Herbicides

  • Herbicides are sprayed onto crops to prevent the growth of unwanted plants and weeds.
  • Herbicides reduce biodiversity for two reasons:
    • The direct removal of plants.
    • Species that feed on the unwanted plants cannot survive.
Monocultures

Monocultures

  • When crops are grown on a large scale for agriculture, a single crop (a monoculture) species covers many fields.
    • A monoculture directly decreases biodiversity.
    • Fewer species can survive in monoculture environments.

Conservation vs Farming

Agricultural impacts can be avoided through conservation schemes. There is often conflict between the benefits of agriculture and the problems of reducing biodiversity.

Protecting endangered species

Protecting endangered species

  • Endangered species can be protected to avoid extinction.
    • E.g. Tigers have lost significant parts of their habitat to agriculture. Protection of tigers has helped their population sizes increase again.
Protecting areas

Protecting areas

  • Specific areas with high biodiversity can be protected.
  • Protected areas cannot be developed into farmland.
    • E.g. Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
Environmental Stewardship Scheme

Environmental Stewardship Scheme

  • Farmers are encouraged to balance agriculture with conserving biodiversity.
    • E.g. Allowing plants to grow around fields.
Conservation vs farming

Conservation vs farming

  • Although agriculture has many negative impacts on biodiversity, it is necessary to support the growing human population.
  • The balance between conserving species and farming can be a conflicting issue.
