Discourse markers are a combination of words that include conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions.
Discourse Markers
- Discourse markers are a combination of words that include conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions.
- They organise the speech and give coherence.
- Below is a list of some of these words but it is not exhaustive.
Some markers
- en primer lugar - in the first place, first of all
- en segundo lugar - in second place, second of all
- por un lado - on the one hand
- por otro lado, en cambio - on the other hand
- por cierto - by the way
Other Markers
- es decir - it means, that's to say
- por ejemplo - for example
- de hecho - in fact
- al final - at the end
- además - moreover
- en conclusión - in conclusion
Examples
- En primer lugar, no es importante que hagas este trabajo ahora.
- In the first place, it isn’t important that you do this work now.
- En cambio, si quieres, sería muy útil si puedes comprarme unos lápices nuevos.
- On the other hand, if you want, it would be very useful if you could buy me some new pencils.
