Impact on the Americas

Treatment of slaves
- Slaves were not treated like human beings.
- Around 20% of all slaves died on the journey to the Americas.
- Between 1532 and 1832, around 12 million Africans were sold as slaves.
- Over three million slaves were transported by British companies and British merchants.

White supremacy and racism
- White supremacy is the idea that white people are better because of their skin colour.
- Many historians argue that this racism developed because of the slave trade.

Impact on Africa
- The slave trade had a long-term impact on Africa as a continent.
- Millions of young people were taken away.
- It could be argued that Africa was weakened by the slave trade and this allowed the continent to be conquered by Europeans in the 19 th century.
