King John
History: KS3, topic 2.4.1
King John
King John had to deal with the problems caused by his brother, King Richard I. He was very unpopular and faced rebellion in Normandy.

King John and his brother, Richard the Lionheart
- Richard the Lionheart (King Richard I) was remembered as a chivalrous King who went to fight in the Crusades (military expeditions in the Holy Land). He was held for ransom until 1194 AD.

Richard I's spending
- To fund the Crusades, Richard I spent a lot of money. He used up all the money in the ‘treasury’.
- Whilst Richard I was away in the Holy Land, barons (noblemen) gained more and more power.
- This was because the King was not there to restrain them.

Difficulties facing King John
- This left King John with a lot to deal with.
