Marxist and Revisionist Interpretations
Marxist historians view the Civil War in the context of class revolution. Revisionists are trying to broaden our understanding of the Civil War.

Marxist historians
- Marxist historians believe history is a product of class war.

Marxist interpretation
- Marxist historians view the Civil War as a battle between merchants and the gentry.
- They describe the events as the ‘English Revolution’ rather than a civil war.

Revisionist interpretation
- Revisionists argue that we should view the Civil War in a wider context.
- They argue it was driven by Charles I and Parliament’s bad relations which had been building for decades.
- They also want us to broaden our focus from England and start considering the impact of the Civil War in Scotland and Ireland.
