Formulations

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 8.1.2

Formulations

Formulations are mixtures of chemicals that have been designed to create useful products.

Each component has a role

Each component has a role

  • In a formulation, each component helps to decide what the mixture’s overall properties are.
Quantity of each component

Quantity of each component

  • To make sure that a formulation does what it is supposed to, each chemical component must be present in a precisely measured quantity.
Examples of formulations

Examples of formulations

  • Formulations are everywhere around us in day-to-day life. Examples include:
  • Fuels
  • Cleaning agents
  • Metal alloys
  • Fertilisers
  • Medicines

Test yourself on Formulations

  • Choose the correct statement about formulations.

  • Why must each component of a formulation be present in a precisely measured quantity?

  • A cleaning agent formulation contains several chemicals mixed in exact quantities. What is most likely to happen if the quantity of one chemical is changed from its specified amount?

  • Choose the correct statement about formulation components in each pair.

  • Each component of a formulation helps decide its overall properties. If the amount of one chemical in a medicine formulation changed, what would most likely happen to the medicine?
