Reducing Resource Usage

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 10.2.4

Reducing Resource Use

Our use of resources can be reduced by reusing and recycling existing materials or by encouraging people to use them less. This could:

Reduce waste production

Reduce waste production

  • If materials are not reused or recycled, the materials are "waste" and accumulate in landfill sites.
Reduce environmental damage

Reduce environmental damage

  • Resource extraction can cause significant environmental damage.
  • More recycling and reusing materials can reduce the need for resource extraction (like mining).
Increased efficiency

Increased efficiency

  • Increased efficiency in terms of both cost and energy consumption.
Sustainability

Sustainability

  • Ensure the preservation of raw materials for use by future generations.

Test yourself on Reducing Resource Usage

  • What is not a benefit of reducing the use of resources?

  • Why does recycling materials reduce environmental damage?

  • Why does reducing resource use help ensure sustainability?

  • Why does reusing and recycling materials reduce the amount of waste produced?

  • What is likely to happen to costs when the use of resources becomes more efficient?
