Reactions of Metals with Acids

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 4.3.1

Reaction of Metals with Acids

When acids react with metals, hydrogen and a salt are always formed. The first part of the salt's name comes from the metal involved. The second part of the name comes from the acid.

Example 1

Example 1

  • Magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen
Example 2

Example 2

  • Zinc + sulfuric acid → zinc sulfate + hydrogen
Example 3

Example 3

  • Iron + sulfuric acid → iron sulfate + hydrogen

Test yourself on Reactions of Metals with Acids

  • What are the products of reactions between metals and acids?

  • What would a salt be called if it was produced by reacting potassium with nitric acid?

  • What would the salt be called if iron reacted with hydrochloric acid?

  • Select the true statement in each pair
