Conductors
Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 2.3.10
Metals as Conductors
Metals conduct heat and electricity well. This is because of the delocalised electrons that are around the layers of positive ions.

Electrical conductors
- Metals are good conductors of electricity because their delocalised electrons can carry a charge within the structure.
- The electrons move from the negative terminal to the positive terminal.

Heat conductors
- The same delocalised electrons can also carry heat energy within the structure.
Test yourself on Conductors
What types of energy do metals conduct well?
What is the relationship between the electrons that carry heat energy in a metal and the electrons that carry electrical charge?
Which feature of the structure of metals makes them good conductors?
What property of delocalised electrons allows them to carry heat energy and electrical charge throughout a metal's structure?
What would happen to a metal's electrical conductivity if its delocalised electrons could not move freely through the structure?
