Numerical pH Scale

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 4.3.7

pH and the Concentration of H+ Ions

The numerical pH scale is a measure of the concentration of H+ ions in a solution. For every increase of 1 in pH, the concentration of H+ ions gets divided by 10.

Increase pH by 1 → divide H+ concentration by 10

Test yourself on Numerical pH Scale

  • What concentration of H+ ions does a substance with a pH of 3 have?

  • What happens to the concentration of H+ ions every time the pH increases by 1?

  • The pH of lemon juice is about 2, whereas tomato juice's pH is about 4. Approximately how much of an increase in hydrogen ion concentration is there between tomato juice and lemon juice?

  • State the concentration of H+ ions, in mol/dm3, for solutions of each of the following pH values.

  • What is the concentration of H+ ions in a solution of pH 13?
