Reducing Use of Metal

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 10.2.6

Recycling Metals

The process of recycling metals involves melting and then reshaping the metal. Recycling is preferable to mining and extracting new resources for the following reasons:

Less energy required

Less energy required

Fewer waste rock heaps

Reduced burning of fossil fuels

Test yourself on Reducing Use of Metal

  • When compared with mining and extracting, recycling metals...

  • What are the steps in the process of recycling metals?

  • What is one benefit of recycling metal compared with mining and extracting new metal ore?

  • Recycling metal requires less energy than mining and extracting new metal ore. Why does this also reduce the burning of fossil fuels?

  • A factory that currently recycles scrap metal switches to mining and extracting new metal ore instead. What would you expect to happen to the number of waste rock heaps it produces?
