Mixtures

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 1.1.5

Mixtures

Mixtures are made of 2+ substances (elements or compounds) that haven't been combined chemically. Mixtures can be separated. Their chemical properties don't change because they have been mixed with another substance. Mixtures are common in everyday life.

Air

Air

  • The air around us is a mixture of different gases, including oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
Pasta and vegetables

Pasta and vegetables

  • A bowl with both pasta and vegetables in it is a mixture.
  • This is because there have been no chemical reactions between the vegetables and the pasta.

Test yourself on Mixtures

  • Why are both air and a bowl of pasta and vegetables classed as mixtures?

  • Why can the different gases in air be separated from each other?

  • Why do the vegetables in a bowl of pasta and vegetables keep their original chemical properties?

  • Why can the pasta and vegetables in a mixed bowl be separated back into their original parts?

  • Why is a substance formed when elements react together not classed as a mixture?
