Purity

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 8.1.1

Effects of Impurities on Melting/Boiling of a Sample

Chemically pure substances have exact and specific melting and boiling points. Adding impurities will widen the range of temperatures at which the sample melts or boils.

Test yourself on Purity

  • More impurities in a sample will...

  • What does it mean if a solid melts over a range of temperatures, instead of at one exact point?

  • How do impurities affect the melting and boiling points of samples?

  • Decide which statement about melting point data and purity is correct

  • Why is sodium chloride classed as a pure substance in the text?
