Conditions and Equilibrium
Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 6.2.3
Conditions and Equilibrium
Changing the conditions in a reversible reaction affects the position of equilibrium.

Changing conditions
- The conditions determine the relative quantities of the different reactants and products in a reaction at equilibrium.

Le Chatelier's principle
- Le Chatelier’s principle says that if any of the conditions of a reversible reaction at equilibrium are changed, the closed system will adapt to counteract whatever has changed.
- This principle is used to predict the outcome of changes imposed on a system at equilibrium.
Test yourself on Conditions and Equilibrium
What happens to a system at equilibrium when one of its conditions is changed, according to Le Chatelier's principle?
What determines the relative amounts of the substances involved in a reaction at equilibrium?
What would you expect to happen to the relative amounts of reactants and products at equilibrium if the conditions of a reversible reaction are changed?
What does a reaction mixture contain once a reversible reaction has reached equilibrium?
What is meant by a change in the position of equilibrium of a reversible reaction?
