Introducing Moles

Chemistry: AQA GCSE Higher, topic 3.1.9

Moles

Moles are a measurement of chemical amounts.

Individual atoms

Individual atoms

  • Because atoms and molecules are so small, it is inconvenient to talk about individual atoms.
  • Instead, chemical amounts can be measured in moles.

Moles

  • 1 mole of a substance is 6.02x1023 atoms of that substance.
  • This number is called the Avogadro constant.

Test yourself on Introducing Moles

  • Which of the following is a measurement of chemical amounts?

  • What is the Avogadro constant?

  • Using Avogadro's constant (6.02x1023), how many moles are represented by 1.806x1024 atoms of a substance?

  • Why are chemical amounts measured in moles rather than as individual atoms or molecules?

  • Select the true statement in each pair
