Blood Vessels

Science: Year 5 & 6 National Curriculum, topic 7.1.3

Blood Vessels

The blood is transported through blood vessels. There are three main types of blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries.

Arteries

Arteries

  • Most arteries carry blood that is rich in oxygen.
  • Arteries are thick to withstand high pressure.
Veins

Veins

  • Most veins carry blood with high levels of carbon dioxide.
  • Veins have valves to stop blood from flowing backwards.
Capillaries

Capillaries

  • Capillaries are really thin.
  • Nutrients and gases can easily pass through the thin capillary walls.

Test yourself on Blood Vessels

  • What structures transport blood?

  • What gas is found in high levels in the blood that runs through most veins?

  • Which blood vessels allow nutrients and gases to pass easily through their walls?

  • What is correct about arteries?

  • What structure in the veins stops the blood from flowing backwards?
