Blood Cells
Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. Blood contains three types of cells: red, white and platelets.

Red blood cells
- Red blood cells pick up oxygen from the lungs and carry it to the muscles.
- Red blood cells return carbon dioxide from the muscles to the lungs.

White blood cells
- White blood cells fight microbes.
- Microbes are microorganisms that cause disease.

Platelets
- Platelets allow the blood to clot.
- Blood clotting is a normal process that helps stop bleeding when you get a cut.
