Gravity & Other Forces

Science: Year 5 & 6 National Curriculum, topic 5.2.8

Gravity & Other Forces

Activity and other forces may act on the same object at the same time.

Objects moving through the air

Objects moving through the air

  • As an object falls through the air due to gravity, the force in the opposite direction is air resistance.
Objects moving through water

Objects moving through water

  • As an object falls through the water due to gravity, the force in the opposite direction is called upthrust.
  • Upthrust is a force that only acts in fluids.
Gravity on the ground

Gravity on the ground

  • On the ground, the force of gravity is pulling you down to the ground.
  • Gravity is the force that stops you floating away into the sky!
Reaction forces on the ground

Reaction forces on the ground

  • A reaction force is a force pushing in the opposite direction to gravity when you are on the ground.
  • A reaction force stops you falling through the ground!

Test yourself on Gravity & Other Forces

  • When an object falls through the air due to gravity, what is the force in the opposite direction?

  • What is a force that only acts in fluids?

  • As an object falls through water due to gravity, what is the force that acts in the opposite direction?

  • Gravity is the force that pulls you to the ground and stops you from floating away. What is the force that acts against gravity to stop you falling through the ground?
