Separating Solids from Liquids
Science: Year 5 & 6 National Curriculum, topic 3.2.2
Separating Solids from Liquids
Dissolving, evaporating and filtering are processes related to mixing and separating solids and liquids.

Physical changes
- Dissolving and evaporating are physical changes and can be reversed.
- The same process can be used to separate other materials dissolved in liquids.

Getting sand from sandy water
- If sand is mixed with water, these substances can be separated using a sieve or filter.
- The water is made of small particles that can pass through a filter.
- The sand is made of larger particles that can NOT fit through the filter, so they are left behind.
- The same process can be used to separate other solids from liquids.
