Photosynthesis Experiments

Biology: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 6.1.6

Measuring the Rate of Photosynthesis

The rate that pond weed produces bubbles indicates the rate of photosynthesis. The bubbles released are oxygen, a waste product of photosynthesis.

Investigating Photosynthesis Rates

Light intensity is not the only factor that can affect the rate of photosynthesis. Other factors that you might want to investigate are:

Temperature

Carbon dioxide concentration

Test yourself on Photosynthesis Experiments

  • Light intensity can affect the rate of which process in plants such as pondweed?

  • The bubbles used to measure the rate of photosynthesis in pondweed are full of which gas?

  • Which of these is NOT a variable that should be controlled when testing the effect of light intensity on plant photosynthesis?
