Carrier Proteins
Biology: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 3.3.3
Carrier Proteins
Proteins called carrier proteins sit within cell membranes and play a role in active transport.

Specific channels
- The proteins act as channels, through which molecules can move into the cell.
- They are specific, so each type of protein only lets in one particular substrate.

Change shape
- The substrate binds to the protein, and then using energy (from respiration), the protein changes shape, and the substrate is released into the cell.
- Then the protein returns to its original shape.
