Water in Urine

Biology: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 13.1.4

Volume of Urine

Urine is produced in different quantities as a controlled way of losing water. The kidneys adjust urine volume and concentration depending on the amount of water consumed and the amount of sweat that has been produced.

High water consumption + minimal sweating

High water consumption + minimal sweating

  • Urine is:
  • Produced in larger volumes.
  • Lighter in colour because it is less concentrated.
Low water consumption + lots of sweating

Low water consumption + lots of sweating

  • Urine is:
  • Produced in smaller volumes.
  • Darker in colour because it is more concentrated.
