Co-ordinates are used to plot the position of points on a graph.

  • On the graph above, there is:
  • A horizontal line called the x-axis.
  • A vertical line called the y-axis.

  • The axes are numbered to tell you how far along or how far up the axis a point is.
    • How far along the x-axis a point is is called the x-coordinate.
    • How far up the y-axis a point is is called the y-coordinate.

  • We give the location of a point in coordinates (x,y).
    • x is the x-coordinate of the point.
    • y is the y-coordinate of the point.
  • The x-coordinate is always given before the y-coordinate.

Points

  • The point on the grid has coordinates (2,1).
    • This means the point is 2 along, and 1 up.
  • The axes meet at a point called the origin which is at (0,0).
