Finding 1,000 More or Less than a Number

When we add or take away 1,000 from a number, we need to focus on the thousands column.

Find 1,000 more

To add 1,000, we add 1 to the number in the thousands column:
- 7,659 + 1,000 = 8,659

Find 1,000 less

To take away 1,000, we subtract 1 from the number in the thousands column:
- 7,659 - 1,000 = 6,659

Add 1 to 9

Sometimes we want to add 1,000 and the number in the thousands column is 9.
To do this, change the 9 to a 0 and add 1 to the number in the thousands column:
- 9,629 + 1,000 = 10,629

Take away 1 from 0

Sometimes we want to take away 1,000 and the number in the thousands column is 0.
To do this, change the 0 to a 9 and take away 1 from the number in the thousands column:
- 50,144 - 1,000 = 49,144
