Size of Angles

We use the word angle to describe the amount of turn between two straight lines that meet at a point. Angles are measured in degrees.

A full turn

  • A full turn of a circle is 360°.
    • When the minute hand goes from 12 all the way around back to 12, it would have done a 360° turn.
Quarter past

Quarter past

  • A quarter of a full turn is 90°.
  • We call a 90° angle a right-angle.
    • When the minute hand goes from 12 to quarter past, it would have done a 90° turn.
Half past

Half past

  • Half of a full turn is 180°.
    • When the minute hand goes from 12 to half past, it would have done a 180° turn.
Quarter to

Quarter to

  • Three quarters of a full turn is 270°.
    • When the minute hand goes from 12 to quarter to, it would have done a 270° turn.
