Adding and Subtracting Masses

We often need to add or subtract masses with the same unit or different units.

Same units

Same units

  • You can add or subtract masses with the same unit of measurement easily.
  • Use your normal addition or subtraction method.
  • Do not forget to write in the correct unit of measurement.
    • 200 g + 85 g = 285 g
    • 8 kg - 3 kg = 5 kg
Different units

Different units

  • If the units of measurement are mixed, it can help to work out the grams and kilograms separately.
  • For example: 3 kg 200 g + 4 kg 700 g = ?
    • 3 kg + 4 kg = 7 kg
    • 200 g + 700 g = 900 g
    • 7 kg + 900 g = 7 kg 900 g = 7,900 g
