Finding fractions of an amount

- Divide the number by the denominator.
- Multiply what's left by the numerator.
Example
Example
- Find 2/3 of 12.
- This means find two thirds of twelve.
Divide by denominator
Divide by denominator
- Chop one whole number 12 into 3 equal pieces.
- 12 = 4 + 4 + 4
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Multiply by numerator
Multiply by numerator
- The numerator tells us that we need 2 of those equal pieces.
- That means we need to multiply 4 by 2:
- 4 × 2 = 8
- So 2/3 of 12 is 8.
