Fractions of an Amount

Fractions are a kind of division. We can find a unit fraction of an amount.

Finding fractions of an amount

  • To find a fraction of an amount or number, we must:
    • Divide the number by the denominator.
    • Multiply what's left by the numerator.

Example

  • Find 2/3 of 12.
  • This means find two thirds of twelve.

Divide by denominator

  • Chop one whole number 12 into 3 equal pieces.
    • 12 = 4 + 4 + 4
    • 12 ÷ 3 = 4

Multiply by numerator

  • The numerator tells us that we need 2 of those equal pieces.
  • That means we need to multiply 4 by 2:
    • 4 × 2 = 8
  • So 2/3 of 12 is 8.
