Fractions of an Amount

Fractions are a kind of division. We can find a unit fraction of an amount.

Finding fractions of an amount

To find a fraction of an amount or number, we must:
- Divide the number by the denominator.
- Multiply what's left by the numerator.

Example

Find ²/₃ of 12.
This means find two thirds of twelve.

Divide by denominator

Chop one whole number 12 into 3 equal pieces.
- 12 = 4 + 4 + 4
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4

Multiply by numerator

The numerator tells us that we need 2 of those equal pieces.
That means we need to multiply 4 by 2:
- 4 × 2 = 8
So ²/₃ of 12 is 8.
