Finding 10 More or Less than a Number

When we add or take away 10 from a number, we need to focus on the tens column.

Find 10 more

To add 10, we add 1 to the number in the tens column:
- 569 + 10 = 579

Find 10 less

To take away 10, we subtract 1 from the number in the tens column:
- 569 - 10 = 559

Adding to 9

Sometimes we want to add 10 and the number in the tens column is 9.
To do this, change the 9 to a 0 and add 1 to the number in the hundreds column:
- 191 + 10 = 201

Taking away from 0

Sometimes we want to take away 10 and the number in the tens column is 0.
To do this, change the 0 to a 9 and take away 1 from the number in the hundreds column:
- 300 - 10 = 290
