When we add or take away 100 from a number, we need to focus on the hundreds column.

- To add 100, we add 1 to the number in the hundreds column:
- 370 + 100 = 470

- To take away 100, we subtract 1 from the number in the hundreds column:
- 370 - 100 = 270

- To do this, change the 9 to a 0 and add 1 to the number in the thousands column:
- 4980 + 100 = 5080
