Recognising Four-Digit Numbers
We can find the value of each digit in a four-digit number by looking at its place value.


Place value
Place value
- Each digit in a number has a place value.
- The place value of the digit will change how much it is worth.
- Four digit numbers can be split into four columns:
- Thousands.
- Hundreds.
- Tens.
- Ones.

- In 5327, there are:
- 5 'thousands'.
- 3 'hundreds'.
- 2 'tens'.
- 7 'ones'.


Writing four digit numbers
Writing four digit numbers
- We can put a comma sign after the number in the thousands column.
- This makes the number easier to read:
- 5,327 = 5327
- You don't have to write your answers with commas in.
