We can find the value of each digit in a four-digit number by looking at its place value.

Place value

Place value

  • Each digit in a number has a place value.
  • The place value of the digit will change how much it is worth.
  • Four digit numbers can be split into four columns:
    • Thousands.
    • Hundreds.
    • Tens.
    • Ones.

  • In 5327, there are:
    • 5 'thousands'.
    • 3 'hundreds'.
    • 2 'tens'.
    • 7 'ones'.

Writing four digit numbers

  • We can put a comma sign after the number in the thousands column.
  • This makes the number easier to read:
    • 5,327 = 5327
  • You don't have to write your answers with commas in.
