Mass

We use the word mass to describe the measurement of how heavy something is. Metric measurements of mass are based on the unit of measurement called the gram.

  • Gram and kilogram are units of mass.
  • We write the units after the number, using lower case letters.
    • 5 g (five grams).
    • 20 kg (twenty kilograms).

  • Grams are smaller and kilograms are bigger.
  • There are 1,000 grams in 1 kilogram.
  • You should use grams to measure light objects.
  • You should use kilograms to measure heavy objects.
Weighing objects

Weighing objects

  • We use a scale to weigh different objects.
  • Some scales have a dial with measurements written in kilograms or grams.
    • Scales often have divisions between the main numbers.
  • Divisions between the kilograms might be 100s of grams or fractions of a kilogram, like a half or a quarter.
Mixed units

Mixed units

  • You can weigh objects and use a mixture of kg and g.
  • For example, 2 kg 300 g is a mass measured in a mixture of kg and g.
