Using Times Tables to Multiply or Divide Numbers

We can use the 3, 4 and 8 times tables to divide and multiply numbers.

Using times tables

Using times tables

  • We know from our 8 times tables that 3 x 8 = 24.
    • So that means 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
    • That also means 24 ÷ 8 = 3.
  • The division facts match the multiplication fact that we used.
Multiplying ten times bigger

Multiplying ten times bigger

  • Next, we can look at the number being ten times bigger.
  • Again, if I know 3 x 8 = 24 then I know:
    • 30 x 8 = 240
    • 3 x 80 = 240
    • 30 x 80 = 2400
Dividing ten times bigger

Dividing ten times bigger

  • Because we know how to multiply when the numbers ten or a hundred times bigger, we also know how to divide too!
    • 240 ÷ 8 = 30
    • 240 ÷ 3 = 80
    • 240 ÷ 80 = 3
    • 240 ÷ 30 = 8
