Tenths

We can find a tenth of a number by splitting it into ten equal parts.

One tenth

Imagine splitting up a number into ten equal parts.
- One of these parts is equal to a "tenth" of the number.
We can write a tenth as ⅒.

Tenth of a two digit number

A ‘tenth’ is found when we divide a number by 10.
- For example, 20 ÷10 = 2.
So ⅒ of 20 is equal to 2.

Tenths and Decimals

We can work out a tenth of a single digit number, which are called decimals.

Tenth of a one digit number

We can divide a number by 10 which isn’t in the 10 times tables.
- A tenth of 1 is equal to 0.1
This is the same as saying 1 ÷ 10 = 0.1.
The column after the decimal point (.) is called the tenths.

Dividing numbers by 10

Dividing a single digit number by 10 gives a decimal.
- For example, 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6
- 4 ÷ 10 = 0.4

We can count up in tenths:
- 0 , 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1
We can also count down in tenths:
- 1, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1, 0
