Fraction of Shapes and Objects

We can work out parts of shapes and objects as a fraction of the whole thing.

Pizza

  • Imagine a pizza has been cut into 10 equal slices.
    • You eat 3 of those slices.
  • So you have eaten 3 out of the 10 slices.
  • That means you have eaten 3/10 (three tenths) of the pizza.

  • Imagine a bar of chocolate with 12 equal pieces.
    • You give 6 of them to a friend.
  • You have given them 6 out of the 12.
  • So you have given them 6/12 (six twelfths) of the bar.
  • You may notice that 6/12 pieces is also half of all the pieces.
  • So you have given half of the chocolate bar to a friend.

  • There are 8 children in a group at school.
    • 5 of the children are boys and 3 are girls.
  • The fraction of children in the group who are boys is 5/8.
  • The fraction of children in the group who are girls is 3/8.

  • Together the fraction that are boys and girls make is:
    • 5/8 + 3/8 = 8/8
  • 8/8 is eight out of eight, so 8/8 is the fraction represents the whole group.
