The UK system of money uses units of pounds and pence. We use the symbol £ to show pounds and p to show pence.

  • We can write money in different ways.
    • For example, five pounds is written as £5.
    • Twenty pence is written as 20p.

  • We can also write combinations of pounds and pence.
  • For example, ten pounds and forty-five pence can be written as:
  • £10 and 45p or £10.45
  • You should not write the £ and the p sign together without using ‘and’.
    • £3.50p is NOT correct.
    • £3 and 50p is fine.

  • UK coins and notes come in different amounts.
  • The coins are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2.
  • The notes are £5, £10, £20 and £50.

  • There are 100 pence in £1.
  • There are fifty 2p in £1.
  • There are twenty 5p in £1.
  • There are ten 10p in £1.
  • There are five 20p in £1.
