Multiplication Rules

We need to remember the following rules to work out multiplication questions:

Multiplying by 0

Multiplying by 0

  • Any number multiplied by zero is equal to zero.
  • This is because there is nothing to multiply.
    • 4 × 0 = 0
    • 182 × 0 = 0
    • 2,455 × 0 = 0
Multiplying by 1

Multiplying by 1

  • If we multiply by 1, our answer will be the same as the number we started with.
    • 36 × 1 = 36
    • 1,452 × 1 = 1
    • 37,424 × 1 = 37,424
Dividing by 1

Dividing by 1

  • If we are dividing by 1, then our original number won’t change.
  • Think about it like dividing the number in to one piece, the number doesn't change.
    • 23 ÷ 1 = 23
    • 934 ÷ 1 = 934
    • 3495 ÷ 1 = 3495
Multiplying three numbers

Multiplying three numbers

  • We can use number facts to help us with multiplying 3 numbers.
    • 3 x 4 x 8 = ?
  • We know that 3 x 4 = 12
  • That leaves us with 12 x 8 = ?
  • From the 12 times tables, 12 x 8 = 96
