We often need to add or subtract amounts of money with the same unit or different units.

Converting between pounds and pence

  • Remember there are 100p in £1.
    • 200p = £2
    • 500p = £5
  • Mixed amounts of pounds and pence can be written as pence.
    • £9 and 30p = 930p
  • Pence more than 100 can be written as mixed amounts.
    • 675p = £6 and 75p

Adding money

  • Sam has £3 and 60p and Amy has £5 and 80p. They want to find the total.
  • Add the pounds first:
    • £3 + £5 = £8
  • Then add the pence:
    • 60p + 80p =140p
  • Turn the pence into pounds and pence.
    • 140p = £1 and 40p
  • Find the total.
    • £8 + £1 + 40p = £9 and 40p

Subtracting money

  • Sam has £10 and 50p. He buys a game for £7 and 20p.
  • Work out what he has left.
    • £10 - £7 = £3
    • 50p - 20p = 30p
  • He has £3 and 30p left.

Counting on

  • Counting on is one way to help you find change.
  • Sam buys a game for £3 and 99p. He uses a £5 note.
  • Work out the change he should get back.
    • Count up 1p to go from £3 and 99p to £4.
    • Count up £1 to go from £4 to £5.
  • He gets £1 and 1p change.
