Religious Studies: KS3, topic 4.2.3

Agnosticism

Agnostics doubt God's existence, varying from theists to atheists without committing to any religion.

Types of Agnostics

Types of Agnostics

  • Agnostics are those who say they do not know if God exists.
  • There are different types of agnostics along a sliding scale, including:
  • Theists
  • Atheists
  • True agnostics
Theistic Agnostic

Theistic Agnostic

  • A theistic agnostic claims to believe in God, on the balance of probabilities.
  • A theistic agnostic is also insisting that there is insufficient evidence to prove that God, Christianity or religion is real.
An Atheistic Agnostic

An Atheistic Agnostic

  • An atheistic agnostic says that since there is no evidence of God.
  • An atheistic agnostic does not believe in God.
 True Agnostics

True Agnostics

  • True agnostics do not take any binary position, but simply say, 'We really don’t know.'
  • Since they don’t know or are not convinced either way, agnostics would not usually be part of any religion or church group.
