Jewish Perspectives on Death and the Afterlife
While many Jews believe in life after death, Judaism mostly focuses on life here and now.

Focus on this life
- There is little in scripture about death or what happens after death.
- Judaism focuses on living life according to God's will.
- Jews believe they will be rewarded for good deeds and will be close to God.

Afterlife in scripture
- The Torah describes death as “lying with your fathers,” suggesting souls will reconnect with relatives.
- Jews believe in resurrection as mentioned in the Book of Daniel, where those “sleeping in the ground” will awaken for Judgement.

Gan Eden and Gehinnom
- The afterlife is called olam haba, which means “the world to come.”
- Gan Eden (paradise) is where souls go for reward.
- Gehinnom is where souls go to be punished for bad actions during their lives.
- Jews believe if a person hasn't lived properly, their soul will be cleansed before entering heaven.
