Interpreting the Scripture
Religious Studies: KS3, topic 3.4.4
Interpreting the Scripture
Religious texts can be interpreted to support many points of view.

Women in scripture
- Someone who wants to say that men have a higher role in society than women could argue that women were created after men (Genesis 2), and this suggests a lower status.
- It does not necessarily mean that, but that is the problem with trying to understand texts from the Bible.

Equality in scripture
- It is possible for Christians to read the Bible and argue that God did not intend all people to be equal.
- It could be interpreted that God created a chain of command.
- Christians have been slave owners, and some Christian denominations believe that the husband should be the head of the family.
- Some Christians have been at the forefront of change, working towards a more equal society.
