Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. Blood contains three types of cells: red, white and platelets.

Red blood cells

Red blood cells pick up oxygen from the lungs and carry it to the muscles.
Red blood cells return carbon dioxide from the muscles to the lungs.

White blood cells

White blood cells fight microbes.
- Microbes are microorganisms that cause disease.

Platelets

Platelets allow the blood to clot.
- Blood clotting is a normal process that helps stop bleeding when you get a cut.
